Winter Weather Car Care Tips
When freezing weather hits, here are a few cold car care tips to keep in mindโ๏ธ
๐ Battery & Electrical (the #1 winter failure)
โขTest your battery before winter hits. Cold can cut battery power by 30โ50%.
โขIf your battery is 4+ years old, consider replacing it before it strands you.
โขKeep terminals clean and tightโcorrosion = weak starts.
โขTurn off accessories (radio, heat, lights) before starting in extreme cold.
๐ข๏ธ Fluids Matter More Than You Think
โขEngine oil: Use the manufacturer-recommended winter viscosity (e.g., 0W-20). Thicker oil = harder cold starts.
โขCoolant/antifreeze: Ensure the correct mix (usually 50/50). This prevents freezing and overheating.
โขWindshield washer fluid: Use winter-rated fluid (โ20ยฐF or lower). Summer fluid will freeze.
โขBrake & transmission fluids: Low or degraded fluids can cause poor performance in cold temps.
๐ Tires = Traction + Control
โขWinter tires are a game changer if you see snow/ice regularly.
โขAt minimum, ensure your all-season tires have good tread depth (4/32″ or better).
โขCheck tire pressure oftenโcold air drops PSI quickly.
โขKeep a portable air compressor in the car.
๐ง Starting & Driving Smart
โขLet the car idle briefly (30โ60 seconds) before drivingโno need for long warm-ups.
โขDrive gently until fully warm; cold engines and transmissions are more fragile.
โขAccelerate, brake, and steer smoothly to avoid skids.
โขIf stuck, rock gentlyโdonโt floor it.
๐งฏ Emergency Kit (seriouslyโdonโt skip this)
โขKeep these in your vehicle:
โขJumper cables or a jump pack
โขBlanket(s) and gloves
โขIce scraper + snow brush
โขFlashlight
โขWater + non-perishable snacks
โขPhone charger (12V)
โขSmall shovel
โขKitty litter or sand (for traction)
โขReflective triangles or flares
โฝ Fuel Strategy
โขKeep your tank at least half full.
โขPrevents fuel line freeze-up
โขGives you heat if stranded
โขAvoid letting the car sit for long periods with an almost-empty tank.
๐ช Locks, Doors & Wipers
โขUse silicone spray on door seals to prevent freezing shut.
โขAvoid parking with wipers up unless ice is expectedโthey can snap in high winds.
โขNever use hot water to de-ice windows (crack city).
๐ If Youโre Parking Long-Term
โขUse a battery maintainer if possible.
โขPark out of the wind.
โขConsider a car cover rated for winter use.
